First Webinar on EU-China Intellectual Property Innovation Cooperation Premiered |

The outbreak of the pandemic COVID-19 has had and is continuing to have serious impact across the world and affects various industries. In order to insight the development trend of international IP protection, EU-China Joint Innovation Center (EUCJIC) and Business College of Beijing Union University, co-hosted the First Webinar on EU-China Intellectual Property Innovation Cooperation on May 15th, 2020. Guest speakers including Mr. Patrick Nijs, Co-founder of the EUCJIC and Former Belgian Ambassador, Professor Chen Jianbin, Vice President of Business College of Beijing Union University, Ms. Sun Bin, Vice President of Legal & Chief Legal Officer of Xiaomi Corporation, Ms. Li Jieyun, Senior Legal Counsel of Alibaba Group, Ms. Hu Huiping, IP Director of Jacobio Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., and Mr. Joe Huang, Director of EU-China International Intellectual Property Center of the EUCJIC have participated the “Post Epidemic Era --- Intellectual Property Protection for Cross-border Commerce and Trade" themed webinar and deeply analyzed the various intellectual property topics against the development trends of cross-border commerce and trade in the post epidemic era. The whole event was steamed live on Tencent Live, and total of more than 5000 audience watched the live broadcast including many invited partners from the EU embassies, chambers of Commerce, Chinese and European enterprises and universities, etc. The First Webinar on EU-China Intellectual Property Innovation Cooperation started at 14:00 with Mr. Peter Huang, Vice Director of the EUCJIC being the moderator. On behalf of the host of the webinar, Mr. Patrick Nijs, Co-founder of the EUCJIC and Former Belgian Ambassador said that “Like a mirror, the COVID-19 reflects many problems inside the EU and the whole world. In the face of this unprecedented challenge, only through global cooperation, especially further promoting the development of China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership can we prevail over this pandemic. It also shows that the essence of China-EU relations is cooperation and partnership.” At the end of his speech, Mr. Nijs also mentioned that the EUCJIC will continue to further enhance the cooperation and exchange in innovation, entrepreneurship, science, technology, trade and commerce between the EU and China. As the co-host of the webinar, Professor Chen Jianbin, Vice President of Business College of Beijing Union University expressed that the intellectual property innovation and cooperation between China and the EU needs all kinds of resources to work together, among which universities are one of the most important one. In the future, Business College of Beijing Union University will work with the EUCJIC to set up a team of transnational experts and industrial resources, build an international intellectual property research platform, and provide high-quality integrated think tank services for multi-level and multi-field intellectual property cooperation between China and the EU among governments, industries, enterprises, etc.” In her keynote speech, Ms. Sun Bin, Vice President of Legal & Chief Legal Officer of Xiaomi Corporation, introduced the EU legal system in detail, as well as the differences between IP application and IP litigation in the EU countries. She also shared many international patent dispute cases and then deeply analyzed the impact of the epidemic on intellectual property in European countries. Ms. Li Jieyun, Senior Legal Counsel of Alibaba Group, analyzed many real life issues and problems existing in the intellectual property protection of cross-border e-commerce, and shared the development trend of cross-border e-commerce intellectual property in the post epidemic era. As the IP Director of Jacobio Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., Ms. Hu Huiping gave a detailed introduction to the policy and regulation reform of China's pharmaceutical industry in recent years. She then shared her view on the IP development of China’s new drug under the huge impact of the COID-19. Mr. Joe Huang, the Director of EU-China International Intellectual Property Center of the EUCJIC, presented the patent layout of Alibaba, nChain, IBM and the people's Bank of China, as well as the current situation and development of intellectual property protection in the fields of New Finance, New Economy, New Industry, New Infrastructure and Digital Currency. Mr. Huang also shared the development trend of the intellectual property protection for cross-border commerce and trade in the post epidemic era. The First Webinar on EU-China Intellectual Property Innovation Cooperation was successfully concluded with the Q & A session.
